What does a wedding celebrant actually do?

It’s such a common question, and a really fair one.
Most couples know they need a celebrant… but beyond that, it’s often a bit like “what do you actually do?”
The short answer? Quite a lot, but in a way that should feel easy, calm, and not overwhelming.
First — I take care of the legal side
This is the part you don’t need to stress about.
I make sure everything is done properly so your marriage is legally recognised, from your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM), through to signing everything on the day and registering it afterwards.
There are a few steps involved, but I guide you through all of it so nothing feels confusing or complicated.
Then — I guide you through the process
For most couples, this is completely new.
So there are always questions like:
What actually happens in a ceremony?
How long should it be?
Do we have to do vows?
I’m there to walk you through it all, without overcomplicating things.
My role is really to make the whole experience feel clear and manageable, so you can actually enjoy it.
Then we create something that feels like you
This part can be as simple or as personal as you want it to be.
Some couples want something short and low-key. Others want a bit more story and personality woven in.
There’s no right or wrong way to do it, it’s just about what feels natural for you both.
Some ceremonies are very minimal (such as legals only / elopments). Others have a few more personal touches. Most sit somewhere in the middle.
And on the day — I hold the space
This is the part people don’t always realise matters so much.
On the day, I’m there to:
keep things flowing
gently guide you through each moment
help you feel relaxed (even if you’re a bit nervous)
It’s not about being overly formal or performative, it’s about creating a moment that feels calm, easy, and genuinely you.
Sharing a few laughs, a couple of happy tears, and a really good energy all around.
And everything in between
There’s also a lot happening quietly in the background - all there to make your day feel easy.
Things like:
preparing your ceremony - shaping the script, creating your vow books, and making sure everything feels like you
making sure timing works on the day
coordinating with your photographer and other vendors
handling all the paperwork, and making sure everything is done properly and in line with legal requirements, including ongoing registration, training, and insurance
All the little details that mean you don’t have to think about them.
So… what does a wedding celebrant actually do?
We take care of the legal side, guide you through the process, and help create a ceremony that feels like you, without it feeling complicated or overwhelming.
If you’re not sure what you’re after yet
That’s completely normal.
If you’d like to talk it through, I’m always happy to have a chat, no pressure, just a starting point.
Mandy x
