One of the things I love about Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs is just how many gorgeous outdoor spaces we have on our doorstep. From harbour views to leafy gardens, there are some beautiful locations that can be perfect for a small, relaxed wedding ceremony, particularly if you're planning something intimate or choosing a legals-only wedding.

And here's the really good bit: if you're keeping things very simple, you may not even need to formally book the space.

Under current City of Sydney guidelines, wedding ceremonies in its parks and public spaces that don't use infrastructure or equipment and don't require exclusive use of a facility don't need to apply for approval.

So, if your idea of the perfect wedding is simply the two of you, your witnesses and your celebrant meeting somewhere beautiful to make it official, here are five gorgeous spots to consider.

1. Rushcutters Bay Park

If you love the idea of getting married beside the water, Rushcutters Bay Park is a beautiful option. With wide green spaces, established trees and views across the harbour, it has that unmistakable Sydney feel without needing a traditional wedding venue.

2. Beare Park, Elizabeth Bay

Tucked away on the Elizabeth Bay foreshore, Beare Park is a gorgeous little spot with views across the harbour. It feels intimate and relaxed, which makes it a lovely choice if you don't want a big production around your ceremony. You could arrive, meet your celebrant and witnesses, say your legal words, exchange rings if you'd like to, sign your paperwork, and then head somewhere nearby for lunch, dinner or a glass of champagne to celebrate.

3. Embarkation Park, Potts Point

Embarkation Park is one of those lovely Sydney spaces that can feel surprisingly peaceful despite being so close to the city. Located on Victoria Street in Potts Point, its elevated position, green space and city outlook provide a beautiful backdrop for a simple wedding ceremony. It's particularly suited to couples looking for something meaningful but uncomplicated.

4. Arthur McElhone Reserve, Elizabeth Bay

For something a little more romantic, Arthur McElhone Reserve is definitely worth a look.

Located opposite Elizabeth Bay House, this landscaped garden has gorgeous greenery, an ornamental water garden and spectacular harbour views. City of Sydney describes it as a popular location for weddings and ceremonies. It's a beautiful setting for an intimate ceremony and feels quite different from an open park.

5. Paddington Reservoir Gardens

If you're looking for something a little different, Paddington Reservoir Gardens is pretty special. The combination of historic sandstone, archways, greenery and sunken gardens creates an incredible backdrop, particularly if you'd like your wedding photos to feel different from the traditional Sydney beach or harbour setting.

There is an important consideration with this one, though. Wedding ceremonies can't currently be formally booked or approved at Paddington Reservoir Gardens. However, City of Sydney advises that informal ceremonies that don't use infrastructure or equipment and don't require exclusive use are allowed without a permit.

That can make it an interesting option if you're planning something incredibly simple, but I'd always recommend checking the current City of Sydney requirements before making plans.

So, Do You Need to Book a Sydney Park for Your Wedding?

Not necessarily, and this is where a small wedding can be wonderfully simple.

City of Sydney currently advises that you don't need to apply for approval for a wedding ceremony in one of its parks or public spaces if you're not using infrastructure or equipment and don't require exclusive use of a facility.

If you'd prefer to formally book a location, different conditions apply. There is a booking fee, bookings are approved in three-hour blocks and guest numbers are currently limited to 35 people, including the wedding party.

Booked ceremonies can include up to 30 chairs, a carpet and one table.

Applications also currently need to be lodged at least four weeks before your proposed booking date.

Rules, fees and conditions can change, so always check the latest City of Sydney information before settling on your location.

Planning a Small or Legals-Only Wedding in Sydney?

A wedding ceremony doesn't have to be big to be special. Some couples want the full personalised ceremony with all their favourite people around them. Others simply want to gather a handful of people somewhere beautiful, take care of the legalities and then go and celebrate.

And some want it even simpler, just the two of you, your two witnesses and me.

A Few Things to Think About Before Choosing Your Spot

If you're considering an outdoor ceremony, I'd suggest visiting your chosen location at roughly the same time and day of the week as your planned wedding. That way, you can get a feel for how busy it might be, where the sun falls and which part of the park feels right.

Remember that unless you've booked a space with exclusive-use provisions, you're sharing a public space, there may be dog walkers, picnickers and other people enjoying it too. For many couples, that's all part of keeping things relaxed.
