What Actually Happens During a Wedding Ceremony?

Planning your wedding is exciting... until someone asks,

"So what's actually happening during the ceremony?"

Suddenly you're wondering whether the vows come before the rings, where the legal wording fits in, who's meant to stand where, and whether there's some secret wedding rulebook you've somehow missed. The good news? There isn't.

Every wedding ceremony is a little different, and that's exactly how it should be. While there are a few legal requirements that every Australian marriage ceremony needs to include, everything else can be shaped around the two of you.

As a marriage celebrant, one of my favourite things is helping couples realise there isn't a "perfect" ceremony, there's only the ceremony that feels right for them.

So, here's what a typical ceremony looks like.

Step 1: Guests arrive and settle in

This is where the excitement starts to build.

Your guests arrive, find their seats, chat quietly with family and friends and enjoy the atmosphere while the music plays. Meanwhile, I'll be making sure everything is ready behind the scenes, checking in with your photographer, your musicians and anyone else involved so everything runs smoothly. You don't need to worry about a thing.

Step 2: The entrance

This is one of the most memorable moments of the day.

Traditionally, one partner walks down the aisle while the other waits at the front.

But these days there are so many beautiful ways to make your entrance.

You might:

  • walk with both parents

  • walk with your children

  • walk together

  • enter from opposite sides

  • skip the aisle altogether

There really isn't a right or wrong way.

If it feels like you, it's the right choice.

Step 3: The welcome

Once everyone is in place, I'll welcome your guests and officially begin the ceremony.

This is where everyone takes a breath, settles into the moment and shifts their focus away from the busy excitement of the day.

For the next twenty or so minutes, it's all about the two of you.

Step 4: Your story

This is my favourite part.

It's where we tell your story.

Not the version everyone already knows, but the little moments that make your relationship uniquely yours.

How you met.

What you love about each other.

The things that make people smile because they think, "That's so them."

This is often where the laughter starts... and where a few tissues quietly appear.

Step 5: The legal wording

Every Australian wedding ceremony includes a small amount of legal wording required under the Marriage Act.

Don't worry, you don't need to memorise anything.

That's my job.

I'll guide you through every word, and it flows naturally as part of the ceremony.

Most couples are surprised by how quick and seamless this part is.

Step 6: Your vows

This is the heart of your ceremony.

Whether you've written your own vows or chosen something a little more traditional, this is your chance to make promises to each other.

If writing personal vows feels exciting, wonderful.

If it feels terrifying, that's okay too.

There are plenty of ways to make this moment meaningful without standing in front of everyone reading a two-page love letter.

Step 7: The rings

Next comes the exchange of rings.

Some couples like to say a few words as they place the rings on each other's fingers, while others prefer to keep it simple.

Either way, it's another beautiful symbol of the commitment you're making.

Step 8: The kiss

Yes... this is the moment everyone has been waiting for.

The first kiss as a married couple.

Take your time.

Enjoy it.

Your photographer will thank you later!

Step 9: Signing the paperwork

After you've officially tied the knot, we'll sign your marriage documents with your two witnesses. Depending on your ceremony, this might happen in front of your guests while music plays, or privately afterwards. Either option works beautifully.

Step 10: Your first walk back down the aisle

And just like that...

You're married.

I'll introduce you as newlyweds, your guests will cheer, and you'll walk back down the aisle together to start celebrating.

It's one of my favourite moments to witness because you can literally see the excitement on everyone's faces.

Can we change the order?

Absolutely.

Apart from the legal requirements, your ceremony is wonderfully flexible.

You might include a reading from a family member, involve your children, invite your dog to carry the rings, include cultural traditions or add a meaningful ritual that reflects your relationship.

Your ceremony should never feel like you're following someone else's script.

It should feel like you.

How long should a wedding ceremony be?

Most civil ceremonies run for around 20 to 30 minutes.

It's enough time to tell your story, exchange vows, complete the legal requirements and enjoy the moment without your guests wondering when cocktail hour starts.

Of course, if you'd like something shorter or a little longer, we can absolutely make that happen.

Simply put...

One of the biggest misconceptions about weddings is that there's a "correct" order for everything.

The reality is, once we cover the legal requirements, we can create a ceremony that's relaxed, meaningful and completely personal to you.

That's the beauty of having a celebrant, we're creating a ceremony that reflects your story, your personalities and the way you want your wedding day to feel.

And honestly? That's the best bit!
