How much does a wedding celebrant cost?

It’s one of the first questions most couples ask, and I completely understand, we all have a budget.

The short answer is: it can vary.

In Australia, most wedding celebrants charge somewhere between $400 and $1,500+, depending on the type of ceremony and level of involvement.

But what really sits behind that price is often less obvious.

What you’re actually paying for

It’s not just the ceremony on the day.

There’s quite a lot happening behind the scenes to make sure everything feels easy, runs smoothly, and is legally done properly.

That usually includes:

  • preparing and lodging your legal paperwork

  • guiding you through the process so nothing feels confusing

  • shaping and writing your ceremony

  • supporting you with your vows (if you’d like help)

  • preparing things like vow books

  • making sure everything flows calmly on the day

  • liaising with vendors such as venue, photographer, and videographer

  • registering your marriage afterwards

And a lot of small details you don’t have to think about, because they’re already taken care of.

Why prices can vary

Every celebrant works a little differently.

Some offer very simple, short legal ceremonies. Others spend more time getting to know you and creating something more personal.

Neither is better, it just depends on what feels right for you.

Some couples want something quick and low-key (legals only / elopment). Others want something a little more considered, but still relaxed. Most people sit somewhere in the middle.

A quiet note on what’s included

All authorised celebrants in Australia are registered and meet legal requirements.

Behind the scenes, that means maintaining registration, ongoing professional development, and insurance, all of which ensures your ceremony is done properly and your marriage is legally recognised. It's one of those things you don’t see, but it matters.

Tip: Before confirming with any celebrant, I’d highly recommend checking the Attorney-General’s Marriage Celebrant Register. It’s a simple way to make sure they’re properly authorised and will give you peace of mind: https://marriage.ag.gov.au/advancedsearch/all

You will find my registration there by searching Amanda Hubbard (NSW).

So… what should you expect to pay?

It really comes down to the kind of experience you’re after.

If you’re after something simple and low-key, you’ll likely be at the lower end of the range.

If you’d like something more personalised, with more time and guidance, it will generally be higher.

The size of your ceremony can also play a part, for example, a larger group often means a more coordination, presence, and planning to make sure everything flows smoothly.

The part that matters most

More than anything, you want someone who makes you feel comfortable.

Someone who:

  • keeps things calm

  • makes the process feel simple

  • is organised and reliable

  • helps create a moment that feels natural and genuinely you

That’s usually what makes the biggest difference on the day.

If you’re not sure what you need yet

That’s completely normal.

If you’d like to talk through options or get a feel for what might suit you, I’m always happy to chat, no pressure, just a starting point.
